Surprise Program by Harriet Brown
For some time now
I've made it known to those planning programs that if someone was
needed to speak at the last minute to the Sundstrand Retirees, I could
give a talk on my hobby of Sweepstaking. From the latest online
newsletter, I realized there might not be a scheduled speaker for today's
meeting. So I decided to bring along a DVD which is a
compilation of several of my appearances on national TV, such as Oprah (twice),
PM Magazine, Gary Collins' Hour Magazine, and PM Magazine. When no speaker
showed up, I filled the spot by playing my DVD which was well received.
Most embarrassing
moment in my video was when Gary Collins asked me to sing the last verse of a
song I wrote called "I Mailed a Dream Today." Most impressive prize
was my bright red 2000 Ford Grand Explorer worth $32,655. Most peculiar
win was how I happened to win a smoke alarm by being the 14th caller to
WREX on the same day they did a story about my car win.
Some of the points I
stressed was the importance of following directions, to subscribe to a good
newsletter, enter as often as possible, look for local sweepstakes which have a
much better chance of winning. A case in point was the Wii that my
husband, Stanley, won last week by signing up at the Gateway Community Bank in
Roscoe, and the four prizes I planned on picking up at WIFR this
afternoon from their $2300 Cash Give-a-Way. And I still have a chance to
win the $2300 at the end of the sweeps. This year I've won 65 prizes,
seven in the past week alone.
Other points made:
- Yes we have to pay
taxes of prizes won but can deduct our expenses.
- The "4 C's" are the
goal of all sweepstakers. I have won them:- my Car, a Cruise for four,
Cash ($10,000), and a Computer.
- Everyone has a dry
spell once in a while but can also win multiple prizes in a single
day.
- Sometimes I spend
more than I win in a given time. But the goal of this hobby is not
necessarily the prizes but rather having something to look forward to
everyday. And there's always the joy of sharing the prizes won.
Two great grandchildren are waiting for the delivery of their Spiderwick
Chronicles books and video that I won for them recently.
Lastly, I stressed the importance of a
good newsletter and offered to ask the editor of SweepSheet to send a copy to
those interested.

P.S. Do you know of someone who
could do a program for us? They will get a free meal but at this
time no money for gratuities. |

ALEX ILLYN STORIES As many of you know Alex Ilyn died a few weeks ago. Since he worked in Denver then in the field many did not know him. What a pity! He was very unusual to say the least. His parents walked across Siberia fleeing the Red Russians and landed in Japan then in San Francisco. He was married to a Russian Princess and from there the stories about him abound. I think every one who knew him had an unusual story to tell. I would hate these to be lost. Please send me your story and I will save them and when we get enough we will make a place for them in the Reporter. Don't skimp on the big ones or any of them for that matter. We will give you plenty of time. Dick |
From Harriet Brown: I saw your request for additional stories
about Sundstrand retirees, I thought about my brother, Bob Loy, longtime
Sundstrand employee, who has been dead since 1993. Not long after Bob
died, I took a class in creative writing at RVC and wrote the following one-page
article to fulfill an assignment. Bob was well known in Aviation and
Singapore facilities and I think there may be some interest. And perhaps
this may inspire others to write about their friends and relatives,
retirees no longer with us. Incidentally, Bob's wife, the former Irene
Kowalewski, who worked for Sundstrand in the 40's, lives at The Grand
Victorian in Rockford.
Bob Loy
If it wasn't for the
pancreatic cancer slowly ravaging his body, Bob would never have seen Joe
setting up antennas at the Ham Radio Fest in Alpine Park. He would have
been in the thick of things, showing off his incredible speed in sending radio
messages. In fact, a healthy Bob would probably still be working for
Sundstrand in Singapore, eating lunch at the country club ocupied by the
Japanese during WWII, taking visitors to Boogie Street after midnight to see the
transvestites stroll by.
Before the nightmare
began, Bob had enjoyed two successful careers--the first as a radioman in the
U.S. Navy, the second as a Sundstrand manager. He had been relentless in
his quest for both.
As a boy of 14 he had
drawn a chart with over 1,000 numbers--the exact number of days before his 17th
birthday when he could join the Navy. During the next 21-1/2 years he
married his hometown sweetheart, fathered five great kids and earned the highest
non-commissioned rank in the Navy--Radioman Chief Master. He loved telling
about retiring at age 38-1/2 with a pension for life.
Bob claimed he
inherited his mechanical aptitude, but the Navy taught him electronics--twin
talents that Sundstrand utilized for 25 years, 13 of them in Singapore. He
loved his country, history, travel, ham radio, and people. This, combined
with a natural curiosity and a phenomenal memory, made him extraordinarily
interesting and a wonderful conversationalist. They also gave him keen
insight into world affairs. He would say, "If the truth be known, most
wars start because of inbred human aggression."
Bob's devotion and
support of family and other "blood relatives" was legendary. His only
addition: Prince Albert and his pipe. He didn't drink much, swore
like the sailor he was, and successfully told the same salty jokes over and over
again. "They are so close you can't get a good conduct ribbon between
them." "She wanted to wear her mother's girdle but she didn't have
the guts." "I used to kiss her on the lips, but it's all over
now."
Joe merely glanced up
as Bob approached. "Just another observer," he thought as he began sending
out dit-dit-dot-dits over the airwaves. What Joe couldn't see, couldn't
possibly know, was how emotionally Bob would respond when asked, "Were you
ever on the U.S.S. Guam during World War II? |
