Retirees,
One hundred and fifty retirees and guests had a
great breakfast and tour of the 787 mockup at plant 6 yesterday, 12-10.
Unfortunately, Tim Morris, the Rockford President was calleed to headquarters in
Winsor Locks and was not able to speak to us. As a substitute he asked Colleen
Carroll to read the following message. I was told that he still wanted to talk
to us in person and that he will do it in the
future.

Dec.
10, 2007: Hamilton Sundstrand Retiree Breakfast:
I regret not being able
to be there with you today as you hold your first monthly retiree meeting at
Hamilton Sundstrand. It was my plan to speak to you in person, but
unfortunately, business got in the way - and I needed to participate in some key
meetings that are occurring this week in Connecticut.
Collectively, you
represent a huge wealth of experience with either Sundstrand or Hamilton
Sundstrand, and we appreciate that you remain tied to the company and interested
in the work we're doing here.
With over 30 years' experience with the
company myself, almost half of them right here in Rockford, I believe I
understand what this company means to many of you and I share your sense of
pride and commitment.
We're known in Rockford, and indeed throughout the
industry, for our ability to transform what we touch by developing
industry-leading technologies and incorporating them into successful products
and systems. Increasingly we're becoming known, too, for our systems integration
capabilities - and you'll see some examples of that during your tour
today.
We also continue to be known as a strong global business with
consistent returns and a strong commitment to ethical operations. And we're
tremendously proud of our impact in the Rockford area. As many of you know, we
don't sell our products to any company in Rockford, so that means our sales
represent import dollars, not recycled dollars, into the regional economy,
including ~$250M that we contribute annually to the Rockford area, through
payroll, procurement and other operations, and community support.
A lot
has changed since Sundstrand merged with Hamilton Standard in 1999, so much of
it positive. From a financial standpoint, for example, Sundstrand's 1998 sales,
prior to the merger, were $2B. That was $2B from all operations throughout the
world - including all aerospace operations and all industrial operations (from
Falk, Milton Roy, Sundyne and Sullair).
This year, not even ten years
later, we will ship over $1B of product - from the Rockford site alone. That's
an incredible achievement, and it shows the continued growth potential of this
operation, from existing programs and new programs like the Airbus A400M, F-35
Joint Strike Fighter, and the Boeing 787 that you'll learn more about
today.
Finally, we continue to be known as a source of great jobs for
some of the greatest minds in the business. Earlier this year, Hamilton
Sundstrand ranked second among Aerospace and Defense companies for meaningful
work and the technological challenges that our work provides to our employees.
This type of distinction helps us attract the best talent to the company, and to
the Rockford area. On the tour, you'll see 787 work that is being done right
here in Rockford, and nowhere else in the world, including at Boeing. The trust
that Boeing has put in us to perform on their advanced airplane is truly
humbling.
As we look back throughout the company's first 100 years in
business, there were several points at which the company took a giant,
calculated leap into the next great phase of business. I believe we're currently
in one of those phases as we help reinvent how aircraft and spacecraft systems
function and are integrated. It requires us to develop and quickly mature new
technologies in order to meet the demands of new platforms, and increasingly, to
work with suppliers and partners all over the world to produce those
products.
Many of you were involved in some of those past
technological leaps - and you know they aren't easy. Sometimes they keep us up
at night, sometimes we wonder whether we'll be able to navigate and succeed --
when each day brings another new challenge. But we are succeeding, as you did,
and we hope to provide a sound, growing business for those who come after us,
just like you did for those who followed behind you.
Having you here this
morning gives us a chance to thank all of you - for everything you did to build
a great company and provide us the opportunities we have today. We sincerely owe
you great thanks. We're very proud of this company, our role in Rockford and our
role in the World - and we appreciate the work you've done to build a company
with such a bright future.
Again, thank you for coming today. I
hope you enjoy yourself as you get a glimpse of what your company has been doing
over the last few years -- and I look forward to talking with you in one of your
subsequent meetings.
Sincerely, Tim Morris, President Aerospace Power
Systems

Our
vice president, Cliff Jacobs, gave a great substitute talk followed by a short
presentation on the 787 mockup brior to the tour by Ron
Mussleman.
Pictures of most of the 150 attending can be viewed right here, following this text.
The breakfast itself was top notch with
beautiful center pieces that were given away to attendees afterwards by lot. It
was first class as we are used to expect over the years by Sundstrand. Thanks to
Tim and Colleen.
