on passing of Sundstrand Retirees Should be called into Elsie Lundvall 1721 8th. st. *815-965-4904 ![]() "The best care givers give good examples, more than good advice" Reputation can be made in a moment, Character takes a life time To live to 90, do not try to reach it on a speedometer Don't waste time telling hair raising tales to a bald man. Retiree's Here are the results of a meeting of Chuck Anderson, Lou Suit and I with H-Sundstrand representative Colleen Carroll concerning implementation of the suggestions a group of us made to improve our relationship since the major changes required by the merger. I believe all of our suggestions were addressed. Thanks to those who made suggestions. H-Sundstrand will supply a conference room for our monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month near the cafeteria. The cafeteria will be available for our use. The lunch will usually be self pay, but they will plan to fund a couple of the lunches during the year. From time to time they would like to bring in some employee speakers who could brief us on things happening on the campus. In deference to the use of the cafeteria by the employees we will begin at 11:30. Parking for this and the Dec. 10 breakfast will be in the visitor's lot and on the ring road by the pond. Those requiring a ramp for entry should contact Colleen and arrangements will be made for them to use West entrance otherwise we will come in the main entrance on Harrison Ave. We will still be able to have someone take pictures in the conference room during our luncheons, and if we take a tour of the plant, the company will provide a photographer for us since they have restrictions on the use of cameras for employees and visitors. Retirees will again be invited to lunch on the lawn and subsidized at the same rate they do for current employees. There is a residual fee and instructions for how to get tickets will be given with the invitation. One of our suggestions was that we might get copies of the Noon Newsletter to put in the Reporter. Unfortunately neither HS nor UTC has newsletters anymore. There is something called "Update" sent each week to employees that contain business news. Most of it wouldn't be of interest to us and more importantly it is on the internet behind the UTC firewall so it isn't available to anyone but current employees. As a substitute HS has agreed to send us copies of items that may be of interest to us available for incorporating in our Reporter. They will also consider sending us copies of the pertinent press releases that are available to the public. Warren Carlson, who does the web site, was worried that in the future his computer memory space might run out since we save archive our old material. They will provide space on their server so that we don't have to buy more memory or add server capacity. We will be able to link with it. Because, as I have said before, we try to protect our e-mail list from public access to avoid SPAM and viruses as well as we can.. Therefore all multiple messages are addressed only to me with retirees listed as blind carbon copies. That isn't positive insurance but may be of some help for what ever it is worth. So far we haven't had any complaints that you are getting unwanted material from being on the list. Because of that Sundstrand will not send batch information using our list. We were informed that just like many other things the pension and benefits services has been outsourced and there is no HS benefits person anymore. There isn't even a liaison person on site. We all are driven to the websites. The good news is that the sites are pretty intuitive once you've done them a few times but they can be frustrating for someone not acquainted with them (and for those of us used to dealing with a live person - ah, it's a new day). In lieu of that a step by step flow chart will be developed for us to try to make the path to getting answers smother. Concerning funds, unfortunately, retirees aren't eligible for matching funds, per UTC guidelines. In order to perhaps ease the pain of that fact Colleen has been "doing quite a bit of research as to which employee discounts are still available for retirees. Some are available to HS and Sundstrand retirees, but some only to HS retirees, but there are several, ranging from discounts on air conditioners, cars, glasses, and Dell computers, and she is putting that all together. Colleen is so accommodating. We owe our sincere thanks to her and also to Tim Morris, president. Tim has been involved and behind the effort from the beginning. In order to keep the members group more current with new retirees we are also going to put an enclosure in the exit interview packet that informs new retirees of our existence and how to get on the list. Kent and Beckie Weber: After
32 years as a Research Engineer at Sundstrand
Rockford, Kent retired in 1999. He returned to work in
Seattle as a contract
Engineer until 2003. We did not own a home at that
time so Beckie agreed
to roam the country in Blu, a big motorhome, for a year while we
decided
where to live.kentcandoit@hotmail.com A consulting job brought us to LA in 2004, where we lived in Blu on the beach. After that job we drove up the coast and on to Alaska. We spent the winter in Mesa AZ. Another job took us to England for half a year in 2005 and 2006, traveling in Blu the rest of each year. By now Beckie figured that her year was up and she decided that we would establish a home base for the summer. After all that looking at retirement places all over the USA she picked Loves Park! We have grandchildren there and many old friends nearby. We still have Blu and plan to travel to Mesa each winter, where Beckie has made many new friends Kent Weber |

I'm Jack Dearborn and I live in
Covington, Washington a fast growing community just south and east of
Seattle.
I am married
to Ellen and on December 21st, the shortest day and longest night of
the year, we will celibrate fifty years of wedded bliss.
We have been
blessed with three wonderful offspring, two sons and a daughter, and
they in turn have given us three grandchildren.
In June of
1966, I left The Boeing Company and joined a much smaller but growing
concern called United Control Corporation. Within a few months, I
became one of the first Field Service Representatives from UCC and was
assigned to Tinker Air Force Base on the Adverse Weather Landing System
used on the C-141 Starlifter. Almost one year to the day later, UCC
became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sundstrand. I now worked for the
organization called Sundstrand Data Control.
I continued
to enjoy employment with SDC until I left and joined the Sundstrand
Service Corporation in 1980. I stayed with SSC until my retirement on
December 31, 1999. At that time I was working out of the Seattle Field
Office and representing the newly organized Hamilton Sundstrand unit of
United Technologies.
I stay busy
from late March until September in a retirees golf league sponsored by
the Boeing Employees Golf Association. I am presently the treasurer of
our league and have been for six years. From September till March, I
have "honey-do" projects to occupy me.
At the end
of May, this year, I completed a project that has been on-going for
nearly three years. I wrote a novel! I have not, as yet, obtained an
agent or publisher but have maintained an optomistic attitude. In the
mean time, I write short stories.
I'd like to
say hello to all the guys and gals who I became acquainted with in
Rockford over the years. I do not have any recent pictures to send, as
I expect no one would recognize me anyway. |
