on passing of Sundstrand Retirees Should be called into Elsie Lundvall 1721 8th. st. *815-965-4904 ![]() The trouble with being a good sport, Is you must lose to prove it. Brooding over the past paralyses the present and bankrupts the future. It takes a big person to refrain from small remarks. The trouble with making mental notes, is that the ink fades so fast. Perhaps the best way to live happily ever after, is not to be after too much. |

ALEX ILLYN STORIES As many of you know Alex Ilyn died a few weeks ago. Since he worked in Denver then in the field many did not know him. What a pity! He was very unusual to say the least. His parents walked across Siberia fleeing the Red Russians and landed in Japan then in San Francisco. He was married to a Russian Princess and from there the stories about him abound. I think every one who knew him had an unusual story to tell. I would hate these to be lost. Please send me your story and I will save them and when we get enough we will make a place for them in the Reporter. Don't skimp on the big ones or any of them for that matter. We will give you plenty of time. Support Rockford Manufacturing Initiative Ron Peterson Those of us who retired from Sundstrand have benefited from working as part of one of Rockford’s most important manufacturing companies and helping to make it successful. Even though Sundstrand’s manufacturing shops have migrated elsewhere over the years, manufacturing remains the most significant foundation stone of Rockford area economic development with hundreds of mid size and smaller shops. We have several organizations that are working to maintain and build this manufacturing base that is so important to the well being of our families, friends, and neighbors. One of these, Goodwill Abilities Center has operated a number of training and community placement programs since its inception in 1936. Their TECHWORKS facility on 15th Avenue has an excellent reputation for providing a variety of training opportunities for individuals as well as meeting the training needs of local manufacturers. One of their most successful programs is the “Fast-Track” training course. Students receive 72 hours of manufacturing training over an eight-week period. The goal is to place the students in a full time position with a local manufacturer after graduating from the class. Fast-Track students receive training in blue print reading, calibration, “soft skills” and actual time on CNC machines. Goodwill Abilities Center staff then work to place the graduates in a full time position. One element that is currently missing from the program is the follow-up and encouragement that new employees often need to succeed in their new jobs. They are therefore looking for volunteers who could devote approximately 10 hours, spread over a two-three month period, to assist the student in transitioning from the classroom to full time employment. Mentors would be asked to: 1. Meet the student half way through training period to get acquainted with their prospective students. 2. At the conclusion of training, consult with the Fast-Track trainers to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the student. 3. Work with Goodwill Abilities Center staff to secure permission from the hiring company to serve in the mentoring capacity at the company’s facility/plant. 4. Meet with the student once per week during the first month of employment. Gradually conclude the process once it is determined that the employee is performing at a level to succeed. Abilities Center believes that this valuable contribution of a volunteer’s time will go a long way towards ensuring a successful career for their students. Persons interested in serving as a mentor can contact: Courtney Geiger, Workforce Development Manger Goodwill Abilities Center 1907 Kishwaukee Street, Rockford, IL 61104 cgeiger@abilitiescenter.org 815-965-3795 . |
Potential program suggestions Here are the results of the survey of potential programs that we circulated last month. Other suggestions have come in that weren’t included. I have put them at the end. The bottom line is “if you want to have programs at some of our meetings then pick out a subject and a date and book the program. I will be glad to work with you. Except for this month’s presentation I have not contacted anyone listed. This should be a very easy thing to do and is not a further commitment. Please help us to improve our meetings. More suggestions will be appreciated.
