Carriglitto yohoho@insightbb.com Rockford, IL Petting a koala at Steve Irwins' zoo near Beerwah, Australia Been living in Rockford since moving here in 1951 from Minersville, PA. Still married to the same woman after 45 yrs. Don't know how she puts up with me, but she did give me 3 wonderful children. The oldest son lives in Panama City Beach, FL, daughter lives near us here in Rockford, and the youngest son lives in Breckenridge, CO. We have 2 beautiful granddaughters, both in college. The youngest at NIU and the oldest at U of I. She will be a senior this coming school term and has applied to several Law Schools (this, of course means that she will have to be removed from the will. We can't be responsible for any more lawyers). I first worked at Sundstrand (Sundstrand Machine Tool, Airplane Division) in the summer of 1954 in the 11th St plant, running blueprints and Job prints down to the shop. They got the contracts for the F101, F102, F104, F105, and F106 all at once, and Sundstrand Aviation was born. I went on to college as a Chemistry major, and
worked some summers after that as a technician in the Materials Lab and
as a testman in the labs off 9th St, did a stint in the Army in
1958-1960 where I got to know Elvis, then returned to get my
Chemistry degree at Milton College. After that, started full
time in the Materials Lab, still on 11th St, but helped lay out a
beautiful new labratory in the Harrison Ave plant and moved there,
where I worked in the lab for a number of years until the first Earth
Day, when I was given the job as Environmental Chemist. I did
that for two years, but got bored with that and was given the
assignment to design more "plastics" into our
systems. That was a very
interesting assignment and was met with some very interesting
reactions from project managers ranging from "Great, it saves us money
and is lighter" to "You ain't puttin' any of that *%#@!*^
stuff in my unit!" Somebody
got the bright idea that we could build a better generator than the
stuff we were buying to hook up to our CSD's, and I ended up working on
the team designing our new generator. This resulted in
my spending a lot of
time traveling, to Fullerton, Aneheim, SanDiego, Brea, and
CostaMesa until I got to know California as well as the
natives. That came to an end when Harry and Bob bought this
little plant in Lima, Ohio and somebody threw in this
little place in Santa Isabel, PR. Spent a
couple years back and forth to that plant, helping set up the
impregnation processes there. After that, I got to spend a
couple easy years sitting still in Rockford and retired in 1996 after
34 yrs. Been
keeping busy building and repairing computers, playing at golf
a couple times a week, and I got back to my old hobby of raising
killifish in a pretty big way. I am now a member of the
American Killifish Association, the Wisconsin Area Killifish
Organization, and am president of the Chicago Killifish
Association. For some of the joint activity time that I spend
with my wife, we play a lot of cards with friends and also like to
travel. This January, Kay and I took a 108 day cruise on the
QE2 circumnavigating the globe. We traveled all
around the world, from Ft Lauderdale to Ft Lauderdale. It was
quite an experience, traveling on that staid old British ship with high
tea every day at 4PM and formal dining almost every night. We
were lucky enough to fall into one of those situations that you usually
read about happening to somebody else. We got upgraded to a
huge quarters and to the finest restaurant on the ship, which
is a 5 star restaurant. What better time for this to
happen than on a 108 day cruise! Saw some wonderful sights
and did some unusual things. I rode an elephant bareback in
Thailand, went "punting" on the Avon river in Christchurch, New
Zealand, saw zebras, etc in South Africa, climbed the sand dunes in
Zambia, and more. ![]() Here
is a photo of an active volcano we saw while visiting Rabaul, Papua,
New Guinea I
enjoyed those many years at Sundstrand and miss many of the friends I
made there, but like the rest of you, I couldn't do it now.
There is just no time left for that stuff! |

We enjoy the
updates regarding Sundstrand retiree information and are pleased to
make our contribution.
We
moved to Rockford in 1967 where I began as an Application's Engineer
working for John Landstrom in Plant 1. I had previously
worked for Martin Marrietta in Orlando and John hired me to work on
missile power units replacing engineers lost in the
recent consolidation with Sundstrand's Denver
facility. That began an exciting 25-year career with a great
company including two tours each in Rockford and LA,
and concluding in San Diego. I had a number of terrific
bosses and very much enjoyed my associations with
fellow workers and customers throughout the world.
Unfortunately my career at Sundstrand came to an untimely
conclusion in 1992 thanks to Smuland/Stonecipher but life went
on and I rejoined my former Sundstrand Turbomach boss, Rich
Detweiler, and became president of one of his Precision Aerotech
companies in Wichita, Kansas. Three years later, we sold that
company and at age 55 returned to San Diego County where we
have enjoyed retirement on a golf course in Escondido these
past ten years.
I
began retirement by researching and writing two books
following my Czech ancestors from Biblical times to the present as they
interacted with the great events of history. The
second book, entitled Matej's Legacy, covers the 20th century and
includes significant details on my life with Sundstrand. I
have copies of the books if anyone is interested.
Vikki
and I have been married for 45 years and have three children and six
grandchildren, plus one on the way. We both enjoy playing
tennis, traveling, spending time with family, camping; never
lacking things of interest to do. I also play golf, work at
home-improvement projects with our children, and love to
read. The attached picture shows Vikki and me about
to board a helicopter while on a recent Alaska cruise. We
were celebrating not only our 45th anniversary but my victory over
prostate cancer only weeks before thanks to a great Indian
surgeon. I am now back to almost normal and thank God for a
great life, looking forward to many
wonderful years after finally tapping my
Sundstrand pension.
Cheers!
